The challenge in adaptation of multi-omics tools and lack of genome information discouraged marine scientists to conduct studies at proteome or genome molecular level. However, in recent years, technological advancement in proteomics and mass spectrometry tools facilitated the marine researchers to focus on studies at molecular level for better understanding the role of proteins in larval settlement and metamorphosis. Several research teams, in a joint collaboration effort, optimized, developed, and adopted cutting-edge proteomics technologies while demonstrating application of such methods feasible for marine larval research. Proteomic datasets presented several proteins play a crucial role during larval settlement and metamorphosis. These proteins serve as potential biomarkers for marine pollution indicators, climate change markers, and anti-fouling agents.
